About Tamla Young
Tamla T. Young, an award-winning social-justice educator and author, has always been driven by her passion for storytelling and creating connections. Born in Jamaica and raised in Toronto, Tamla’s journey began with a love for writing that manifested early in life, leading her to publish her first pieces at just 10 years old. Her commitment to social justice and education is rooted in her own experiences navigating anti-Black racism, and she has channeled these experiences into both her academic work and her creative writing.
Tamla's journey is marked by her diverse interests and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. After earning her B.A. Hons in Fine Arts Cultural Studies, she discovered her calling in education, leading her to teach in inner-city Toronto and abroad. Her dedication to inclusive and anti-racist teaching practices is evident in her work as a Kindergarten Specialist, where she fosters a sense of belonging for all students.
Tamla's love for languages, travel, and creative pursuits further enriches her storytelling. As a self-proclaimed "Jill-of-all-Trades" and multipotentialite, she continually seeks new ways to learn, grow, and connect with others through her writing. Her debut picture book, "Ready, Set, Mango," is a testament to her ability to weave personal experiences and cultural narratives into stories that resonate with readers of all ages.
Through her work, Tamla aims to inspire others to embrace their identities, challenge injustices, and find joy in the everyday moments of life.
